Biography

Bernadette Gigliotti is the Senior Executive Officer of the Australian Centre for Career Education (ACCE). Over a period of twenty years, she has been instrumental in shaping the professionalisation of the career industry. Bernadette’s work on the national peak industry body the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) has been central to the development of the Australian Professional Standards for Career Development Practitioners. In 2006, as President of CICA, Bernadette launched the Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners. This groundbreaking work was acknowledged by international career development associations as leading the world in quality careers services. In 2010, Bernadette was the lead developer on the first Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework and the Career Development Quality Benchmarks for good practice. Her work in careers practice has been extensive. She has published textbooks, articles and submissions focused on improving the engagement of Australians with their life formation through career development practices.

After leading the CEAV as President for a number of years, in 2008 Bernadette took up the position of Chief Executive Officer. She set about rebuilding the organisation to reflect the diverse nature of careers across the national landscape. In 2014, with support from the CEAV Committee of Management and the CEAV members, she restructured the association into three divisions, CEAV Incorporated, CEAV Institute (RTO 22523) and CEAV Careers Counselling Australia which provides professional careers guidance to the most disadvantaged in the community through a range of pro bono services and programs. She further developed the association as a not-for-profit educational charity to service the broader educational career development needs of young people and adults. Bernadette’s vision was to build a centre of excellence in teaching and learning in career development practice.

In 2017, she was instrumental in establishing The Australian Centre for Career Education as a Community Precinct Partner within the newly reopened Melbourne Polytechnic Campus in Greensborough. This vibrant community facing Centre serviced over 300 clients in its opening months and is being developed by Bernadette and her team to be the first teaching and learning Centre in career development practice. Bernadette has been a tireless advocate for the introduction of mandated careers education in all Australian schools and the ongoing development of teachers and career practitioners in career education programs and services across all education systems. Her work is based on a strong belief that education is the way out of poverty and that professional and ethical careers services and programs can provide the equality that is needed to ensure access and equity for all to the labour market.
